Our in house nutritionist Marie explains why fat is important in the diet and how it contributes to health.
Omega 3 and Omega 6 are classified as essential fatty acids as they have various functions in the body but can’t be made by the body itself. They are therefore consumed through diet. Omega 3 is known as Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and Omega 6 is known as Linoleic acid (LA).
Fats are needed for a range of different functions in the body. This includes the formation of cell membranes, structural and metabolic functions in the the body. They are needed to enable permeability and flexibility in the cell. This means nutrients are more easily transported into the cell and toxins transported out. By optimising cellular nutrition, cells are able to function optimally, supporting the organs, systems and therefore the functioning of the body.
Fat is needed to nourish our tissues, organs and glands. If our glands don’t have sufficient amounts of essential fatty acids, they can’t carry out their functions as well. Fats are also important for brain development, vision, reducing joint pain associated with inflammation, managing depression, preventing dry eyes, weight management, hormone production and the health of hair, skin & nails. Due to the role of fats in hormone production, low consumption of essential fatty acids may lead to fertility issues.
There are different forms of Omega 3; Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).
The ‘golden ratio’ of omega 6: omega 3 is 4:1. Due to increased intake of processed foods and refined oils the ratio is often a lot higher, and is closer to 12:1- 25:1. Due to the pro inflammatory nature of omega 6 and the anti-inflammatory nature of omega 3 this can be problematic, leading to ill health and chronic disease including type 2 diabetes.
Omegabiocell369 is a 100% plant based oil containing linseed, borage, blackcurrant and evening primrose oil. The omega 3 content is three times higher than the omega 6, providing the right balance of omega 3 and omega 6. Linseed is one of the richest sources of omega 3; ALA. Borage, evening primrose and blackcurrant oil provide omega 6; LA. Borage and blackcurrant also provide vitamin E which is known for its antioxidant properties.
A unique bioester technology is used to create Omegabiocell369. This technology ensures that the oil is ultra pure as it guarantees removal of all pollutants occuring in vegetable oils. The ethyl ester form of essential fatty acids provides high bioavailability and excellent bioretention in the body. This enables the fatty acids to be transported to the cells quickly, having a beneficial effect on the body.
Omega 3 is known for its benefits to heart health; reducing inflammation, reducing cholesterol and aiding blood pressure control. Evidence suggests that ALA supplements might reduce the risk of heart attacks and death from heart disease and arrhythmia. It is found in chia seeds, linseeds and some nuts. Some species of algae and supplements made from them can provide the longer chain omega 3s found in oily fish.
Omegabiocell369 provides the right balance of omega 3 and omega 6. This 100% plant based oil can be added to salads, smoothies and porridge or taken on its own.
