Essential Fatty Acids

Our in house nutritionist Marie explains why fat is important in the diet and how it contributes to health.


Omega 3 and Omega 6 are classified as essential fatty acids as they have various functions in the body but can’t be made by the body itself. They are therefore consumed through diet. Omega 3 is known as Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and Omega 6 is known as Linoleic acid (LA).

Fats are needed for a range of different functions in the body. This includes the formation of cell membranes, structural and metabolic functions in the the body. They are needed to enable permeability and flexibility in the cell. This means nutrients are more easily transported into the cell and toxins transported out. By optimising cellular nutrition, cells are able to function optimally, supporting the organs, systems and therefore the functioning of the body.

Fat is needed to nourish our tissues, organs and glands. If our glands don’t have sufficient amounts of essential fatty acids, they can’t carry out their functions as well. Fats are also important for brain development, vision, reducing joint pain associated with inflammation, managing depression, preventing dry eyes, weight management, hormone production and the health of hair, skin & nails. Due to the role of fats in hormone production, low consumption of essential fatty acids may lead to fertility issues.

There are different forms of Omega 3; Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).


The ‘golden ratio’ of omega 6: omega 3 is 4:1. Due to increased intake of processed foods and refined oils the ratio is often a lot higher, and is closer to 12:1- 25:1. Due to the pro inflammatory nature of omega 6 and the anti-inflammatory nature of omega 3 this can be problematic, leading to ill health and chronic disease including type 2 diabetes.
