YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT?

I’m sure you are all aware of the phrase ‘You are what you eat’, but often many of you may choose to ignore this. But what does this phrase mean?

We can explain this phrase by observing the effects certain foods have on our bodies. This is because food is information that informs your body what is good and bad to eat.

Food contains ingredients that can either have a beneficial or detrimental effect on the body.  Every individuals body responds differently to food, but research suggests that if you eat well, your body will love you for it and the positive effects will far out way the negatives.

Learning what your body responds well to and what makes you feel good is key to nourishing your body properly.  Every person’s body is different and there is no magic diet that suits everyone, if only there were.

Plant based foods

Colourful, bright and nourishing. Eating a wide variety of plant-based foods will therefore be reflected, making you feel this way too. These foods are nutrient dense as they are high in antioxidants, polyphenols and a range of vitamins and minerals. High consumption of a variety of plant-based foods will therefore have positive effects on the body.  These foods can include seeds, nuts, grains, fruits and vegetables.

Protein

Protein is important in the diet for the maintenance and repair of cells as well as a good source of energy. Although protein is beneficial, the type of protein we consume is important. It is beneficial to opt for a range of high quality, lean sources of proteins, as these are more nutritious and beneficial to our health. Good sources of protein include grass fed meat, free-range eggs, wild fish and full fat dairy products.

Vitamins and Minerals

Glowing from the outside starts from the inside. Vitamins and minerals are great for the skin. Vitamin A and Vitamin E are two vitamins that can help promote glowing, youthful skin. Zinc, Sulphur and Selenium are three minerals that are very beneficial to our skin.

Selenium works with vitamin E as an antioxidant to combat free radical damage. Zinc has a role of helping with wound healing and repairing damaged skin. This makes zinc beneficial to those suffering from acne.  Sulphur helps to fight bacteria, which can assist in reducing pores, also helping to combat acne.

From food to minerals it is essential that your cells are nourished for optimum cellular function. Listening to your body and fuelling it with the food and minerals it needs, will help you to become the best version of yourself.
